P.O. Box 52
Thomasville, GA 31799 PLEASE NOTE: Sizes indicated in the catalog are approximate.
Shrinkage in the drying and firing process varies depending on the
composition of the clay. Since we gather clay from a number of different
locations, the composition, and consequently the final size of the
finished piece, will vary. The line drawings are not meant to be
proportional to one another. They are accurate as to shape and surface
design, but should not be used for comparing the size of one piece
to another. |

LEGAL
The Indian Arts and Crafts Act protects Native American artists and
craftsmen and collectors of their work. It is, essentially, a truth-in-advertising
law that prohibits the misrepresentation of merchandise. No product
can be advertised as “handmade by Native Americans” unless
the item is made by a Native American. Ancient Hands supports the
intent of The Indian Arts and Crafts Act and we are in full compliance
with it. Although some of our artists have Native American heritage,
none of our products are promoted as made by Native Americans.
Many southeast Native Americans hid their heritage for generations
in order to avoid persecution. Some of their descendents are beginning
to research their genealogy to document their heritage. Others
believe that racial certification by the federal government is
not important to them.
Our goal at Ancient Hands is to bring attention to an artistic tradition
that flourished for a thousand years in North America. We believe it
is important not only to remember and appreciate this tradition, but
also to revive it. In the coming years, we intend to offer the work
of other reproduction and contemporary artists: shell carvers, gourd
artists, painters, woodcarvers and jewelers. Some of the most gifted
artists who have been drawn to the Southeastern tradition are not Native
American. For these reasons, Ancient Hands has chosen to emphasize
the artwork rather than the genealogy of the artist. |
